Despite the announcement last year that Duke Nukem Forever was a dead project, Gearbox Software is currently developing the game as a follow up to Duke Nukem 3D which was realeased in 1996. The game which has been in development since 1997 has hit a number of snags while in the development process including a lawsuit by Take-Two Interactive which owned the publishing rights to the Duke Nukem franchise. The announcement was made on Friday, September 3rd, 2010 at the Penny Arcade Expo.

Duke Nukem became a popular character in the mid-nineties when first person shooter video games were just starting to take hold on the video game market. Duke Nukem 3D became extremely popular among gamers due to its environmental interactivity and adult-oriented themes which included strippers and gratuitous gore.

The game's protracted development is partly the result of George Broussard's, one of the game's original creators, desire to add new elements to the game. In defense of the games lengthy development, Broussard is noted as saying, "Today's games are MUCH more complex. In Duke Nukem 3D all the characters were sprites. Today they are polygonal models, have to be skinned, and then animated or motion captured. A very long, tedious and complex process."

Duke Nukem Forever is set to be released in 2011 and the release is highly anticipated by video game enthusiasts. It's been a long time since the Duke Nukem character which is described by Broussard as "a combo of John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, and Arnold Schwarzenegger" has entered the mainstream. Someone hoping to get a copy of the new Duke Nukem Forever might want to consider getting in line now.
