Ever hired a technical staff member that did not work out? In this three part article, we part with valuable knowledge to assist you in making the right appointment " first time.
PART ONE
Setting Out:
It is important when hiring technical staff, to do your homework by developing clear job descriptions and knowing exactly what to look for during the interview.
You may be tempted to focus on technical know-how only, but your interests would be best served by also looking for business acumen and communication skills.
It is important to employ a well-rounded person with technical competencies, good communication abilities, an understanding of the business and strong interpersonal skills.
The prospect of locating and attracting these individuals may seem overwhelming.
Starting The Search:
The first step is to develop a clear set of specifications to that include:
- A list of essential certifications, qualifications or experience / competencies.
After you have put a strong evaluation system in place to help you (knowing what you are looking for and what to ask to extract that information), it is time to start searching for candidates.
Make sure you have all your ducks in a row because good technical staff is hard to find and you do not want to let the good ones slip through your fingers because of inadequate processes.
Dealing With A Recruiter:
The more information you are able to give a recruiter, the better the applicant that is sourced on your behalf.
Update your generic Job Specification before approaching the recruitment agency. Speak to the person who is being replaced, they normally know their job and can therefore help best will listing exactly what they do. Specify working hours, shifts and leave periods too.
Be as specific as possible, not just with the technical requirements, but also soft skills such as the ability to communicate effectively or to function well in a team.
If they will not need to work with other people (e.g. co-workers or clients), specify that too, as many technical people are introverted. They may not work well in a team but may be brilliant with machinery.
Create a list of requirements that include things like tools, clothing, equipment that might be needed.
Is this an AA position? Is it an Equal Equity position? Or is it open to all?
Who will they be reporting to and who will report to them?
