(This was originally broadcast in a video by Ben West from Dependable Computer Guys, Inc. )Begin Tutorial: We are frequently
asked how to enable Telnet in Windows Vista, Server 2008 and Windows 7. It has been removed by default and it is a common tool
for testing network connectivity to mail servers and other protocols. The reason you may want to enable telnet in Windows is for administration of routers, switches, and
connecting to remotecomputers. Today I am going to show you how to enable it. You start by clicking your start menu, and then "Run". Type "appwiz.cpl" into the textbox and click
on "OK". This will bring up the program and features window. On the left side, you want to select "Turn a Windows Feature On or Off"which brings up the server manager. You can
scroll down and select "Add Features" from the Features Summary List. In the list, scroll down and locate "Telnet Client". Once selected it, click on "Next" and then finally
"Install" The install process my take several minutes depending on your hardware, so be patient. Once the install completes, click "Finish" Then click on Start, "Run" once gain, type "cmd" and press enter to pull up a command prompt. You can then type in "telnet" followed by the server's name or IP address and the port number you would like to test and
hit enter to run the program. For example, a mail server would look like: "telnet 72.172.83.23 25" It will then return the response from the mail server and you will be able to
enter commands to send mail. I hope you've found this tutorial helpful. If you have any server or network questions, you can give me a call at Dependable Computer Guys.
