subject: Communicate with Confidence [print this page]

We hear people often saying that they hunt for words.

Is this because they are not familiar with the language being spoken?

Before languages were born, there were people who portrayed their thoughts and feelings through actions. Even after man learnt to speak, he still uses his Body Language to assist his communication. When we were babies, sign language was the only form of communication known to us.

Using way-finding signs such as the ones used in airports and other places, to help navigation when people are not familiar with the language, is also a method of communication.

Language is just a mediator in connecting ideas. Oral and Written communication are the only forms that need a language.

Communication generally means exchange of ideas or information among two or more people. But, analyzing and recollecting information are also forms of communication.

An author has a written communication with his readers; a filmmaker a visual communication with his audience and a speaker an aural communication with his listeners.

The Digital Revolution has bridged the gap between businessmen & consumers, employers & employees and instructors & students.

Advancements in Technology have facilitated people to stay connected with each other worldwide and remain updated with information despite their busy schedule.

In this Information Era, businessmen are able to keep track of public demands through online Discussion Forums.

Moreover, we have word processors, which point out spelling and grammar mistakes and correct them for us.

With so many alternatives available, why should Language be a barrier in our communication?

Communication breaks either when the presenter fails to convey the information clearly or when the receiver misinterprets it. At times, we need to kill the ego within while hunting for information. It is better to confirm what we heard than to conclude we are right.

The presenter also needs to stay within his creative boundaries. Creativity is like elastic, which can be stretched till it can bear the pressure after which it will serve no purpose. We can be creative as long as our communication remains unaffected. It should not be used in a way that distract people and make them loose interest in the presentation.

There is always a difference in opinion. Life would not have been interesting if we all thought and behaved in the same way.
