Unlike conventional filters, which physically trap bacteria, a new filter allows them to flow through the water, but kill them using an electric field, that runs through the highly conductive nano-coated cotton. Their experience, a team of Escherichia coli exposed to 20 volts direct current in the filter for a few seconds. The result was surprising, more than 98 percent of bacteria killed during the process.
Scientists say that the new filter is about 80,000 times faster than conventional trapping bacteria. In order to provide a cheaper alternative in the world, the team used a very small quantity of silver nanowires, making the cost almost negligible. Current required to kill only a few milliamps strong, which can be easily supplied by a small solar panel or a couple 12-volt batteries.
