subject: What to Do When You Don't Enjoy Your Work [print this page] What do you do if you are in a job that isn't fulfilling for you? Or maybe you even detest the work you do.
Perhaps it's not actually the type of work that's the issue, but the circumstances of the work or the people with whom you work. Whichever is the case, it leaves a lot to be desired.
What does it mean to bring presence to such a situation? How does a person approach this kind of dilemma consciously?
Another aspect of their career that people frequently struggle with is that there's something they would really like to do, but they can't find a way to turn this into a paying form of employment. This can indeed be frustrating.
So, what's the answer?
The answer is that thereisn't an answer anyone can give us in such a situation.
When we find ourselves in this position, there's no path that someone else can prescribe for us.
What must happen is that the path we need to tread must emerge fromwithin us. For this reason, the way forward is going to be unique for everyone, not formulaic.
It's not fun to have to do something each day that we don't enjoy. From the vantage of our particular circumstances, it may seem we are in an impossible predicament.
Yet many who have been in just such circumstances can testify that in the most amazing ways, resolutiondoes occur when we staypresent.
To stay present doesn't necessarily mean we stay in thesituation. On the other hand, it may mean exactly this.
There are people who can tell you that when they ceased all resistance to their work, it came alive for them in a new way. They began to love what they were doing, and what was formerly just a job turned into something fulfilling through which they could truly express their essence.
Equally, there are many who have found that when they brought presence to their situationnot trying to escape it, and not resisting it, but simply being with itcircumstances amazingly opened up for them to pursue something different, something that really interested them.
What's right foryou? What shouldyou do at this particular juncture in your life? Especially given the global recession.
It would be nice to be able to say, "This is what you need to do." But when answers are supplied tailor-made, we don't grow up. We don't mature into people who can take responsibility for our life and chart a course that's true to our center.
At the core of our being is infinite desire. It's not an emptiness, not a neediness. Quite the opposite: it's a fullness that seeks ways to express itself meaningfully.
When a divine desiredistinguished from a passing fancy or whimarises within us, it does so because it contains the seeds of its own expansion and fulfillment. Of this we can be absolutely confident.
This means there's nothing to worry about, ever. There's nothing to freak out about. Life itself will be our path, leading us precisely where our deepest being longs to go.
