If you are in the need for a knife for outdoors use, such as for fire building, shelter building, hunting and prying you need a knife that holds it's edge well, is easy to sharpen and can endure the elements. And most significantly can withstand any hard use it will get, as a camp or survival knife you can't afford any failures.

As far as blade steel is concerned, many have a preference for high carbon steel because it can be easier to sharpen. But high carbon steels downside is it can start to rust in high moisture environments so therefore requires more maintenance. For this reason many prefer a stainless Steel blades if working in wet and salty environments for ease of care, although a stainless blade can be somewhat harder to sharpen.
