History of the Lobster Roll
Nobody is exactly certain, but it has been said that while the wealthy women of the 1800's enjoyed lobster at their lavish dinner parties, they didn't like them ripped apart at or near the table. So, the chefs for these families started preparing the tasty chunks of lobster meat into easily consumed salads.
This delectable lobster salad had to wait patiently, for several decades, to be joined with its culinary counterpart, the toasted hot dog roll. The union of the salad and roll happened sometime after 1910, which was coincidental when the first soft hamburger and hot dog rolls were manufactured commercially. The tasty lobster salad roll could now be eaten with only one hand! Soon after, these amazing sandwiches were being eaten all over the New England coast.
