subject: Dealing with Resistance: Is there such a thing??? [print this page] In hypnosis (counseling, coaching and NLP) we can work with "resistance" in many ways - as we can do as well in conversations...
One of the easiest ways to do so is to "ignore it" - but - that doesn't always work does it.
Another obvious way - Confront it - yet - that may not be suitable to the client at hand.
What are some other ways? Think about it.
Here are a few suggestions:
=================
1 - Always educate the client about myths and misunderstandings of hypnosis - let them know they are the one doing the trance and that they therefore are in control of their responses.
2 - It is always good to help the client know what hypnotic talents and gifts(abilities) they do have by exercising them in trance with them. That way they may be more empowered and confident in their ability.
3 - Accept the resistance - so called - and use it - Utilize whatever they provide you - validate it - normalize it - and then use the response in your work with them.
4 - Utilize more permissive and indirect technic with them - indirect suggestions, metaphor, questions, are good in working with resistance.
5 - Prescribe the resistance - validate or acknowledge it - and expect them to respond in opposite ways - Don't think of blue.
6 - Dual induction (or triple better yet) - my favorite - provides a wonderful opportunity to work with resistance - not able to track both sides of the trance at once. Confusion
And - IMO - it is beneficial to acknowledge and identify the value of the resistance - - inquire as to the value and intention and utilize it.
These are just a few ways to "use the resistance" - there are many more. Confusion - Disorientation - Overwhelming - Reframing - Encouraging.
How do you deal with resistance in your work with clients?
Another and sometimes more powerful and helpful method in working with "resistance"is questioning (the Spirit of Inquiry) to reveal value and intention of the behavior/response. In trance you do a little reviewing to bring whatever is blocking the person into conscious awareness and identify what the reasons or causes or value of the resistance (fear/doubt/concerns/previous not-so-god experience, etc.).
Usually we find that there's value and good intention - once identified and "read" and then "released" the person proceeds to benefit and enjoy trance. We often realize that the resistance may be serving as a defense, a way to not feel or to not feel bad. Makes sense doesn't it.
