subject: How to Succeed with Taking Online Exams from an Online School - 5 Great Tips [print this page]

Online education is no different from any other educational program. There are still assignments that are due each week. There are still quizzes to take and there are still exams. How well you do in your course overall will depend on the scores you get for your tests, which can account for a fairly large percentage of your grade. Here are some tips to get the best grades that you possibly can on everything from small weekly quizzes to your major exams at the end of the course.

Tip One: No Distractions, Please

This is a busy world we live in and while that might be convenient most of the time, it is a major problem when you are trying to do your best with a test. Turn off your instant messaging program, or if you can set it to ignore or mute. Do not answer emails until you are done with your test. Turn off your cell phone or leave it in another room. Send the kids to another room or if they are very young, have a friend or family member entertain them. Have the dog to go chew his bone somewhere else.

Tip Two: Know the Policy for Tests

Many of the online schools have an open book policy, concerned not with what you have remembered, but what you have learned. Part of what you have learned should be how to find information when you need it, so the ability to go back into your textbooks to help you find an answer is not cheating; it is applying your learning.

Tip Three: Know What the Test Will Cover

Most of the time, a weekly quiz will cover that week's lessons - however there are times when a week's lesson will go beyond the specified chapters. If you learned information in Chapter Ten during the week, you should be aware that the answers might be in that chapter as well as the others.

Tip Four: Do Not Let a Poor Score Ruin the Whole Class

You are not going to ace every exam, even with your book sitting right in front of you. The questions can be tricky and if you are not reading them carefully, they can catch you unaware. If you do fail a quiz, then vow to work harder the following week, perhaps slowing down to carefully read each question before attempting to answer it.

Tip Five: Know What Value Tests Have Overall

If you are really tense when it comes to taking tests, then put the scores into perspective. If they account for more than half of your overall grade, then you might have cause to worry. If not, then consider them small potatoes and while you should still do your best, you should not over think them either.
