subject: Xperia X8: Sonys General Android Solution [print this page]

It is a fact that the Android operating system is the most popular platform and it appears in the largest number of smart phones. Choosing which one to go for is always a big question for Android fans, and the Sony Ericsson XPERIA X8 seems to help provide everyone with a great answer.

The basic concept of the X8 is that this smart phone is a standard handset. It has a touch screen, a virtual keyboard, a digital camera and all the usual hardware features that one expects from a smart phone.

Of course, Sony Ericsson does not make ordinary handsets. One of the many things that makes the X8 stand out is that this device is designed to provide the best Android experience available. While other smart phones verge deeply into the high end hardware and features, the X8 is all about the user experience.

This is evidently seen in the Timescape user interface. This is a streamlined visual layout of all the latest updates, sorted according to chronology and related contact. It makes sorting out relevant information faster and figuring out what one should be doing next is easy. The links also use custom images, making things intuitive.

All on the Surface

Looking at the XPERIA X8, one cannot help but see the impressive way that the handset has been designed. Granted that the look is not unique to this phone (it has the same design used in the XPERIA X10, X10 Mini and X10 Mini Pro), it is still outlandishly stylish.

Speaking of looks, the 3 inch touch screen display is actually pretty good. It has a resolution of 320 x 480 pixels, has a scratch proof surface and is equipped with an accelerometer.

Xperience Everything Else

With its 3.15 mega pixel camera, this handset is pretty much on the lower end of the scale when compared to other smart phones. But once again, this is a device designed for general users. For most people, 3 mega pixels is more than enough for taking great images. The device will allow users to geo-tag images for uploading as well.

Running in the core of the XPERIA X8 is a 600 MHz CPU which will make the handset run those apps and features with little trouble. Users should expect to have a little load time or slowdown issues if the apps are resource intensive however. But aside from that, users can expect this Android to run smoothly.

X8 Wrap Up

Sony manages to provide the XPERIA X8 with average features and still come out with an outstanding product. The practical balance of hardware with plenty of useful features gives the handset plenty of value as an all around smart phone and the device looks exceptionally good too. While the X8 will not answer to very specific needs, expect this handset to be the answer to most smart phone users demands.
