subject: Info On Ethnicity And Hair Types [print this page]

There are different types of hair colors that are dependent on a pigment present in the hair follicles named melanin. Diversity in hair colors depends on the amount of melanin and the color of hair becomes darker or lighter on the basis of melanin present. Some hair colors can be related to particular ethnic groups. Some common hair colors that people have are black, grey, white, chestnut, brown, red and blond. It has been observed that the hair color is closely associated with the skin and eye colors of people and as the skin and eye colors of people of different ethnic groups differ, same is the case with hair colors. The hair color can be changed due to aging, medical conditions, sex and some artificial factors. It has been observed that the color of hair also changes after death.

The affect of ethnicity on the hair types can be explained with the help of biological perspective that indicates that the strength and type of hair is decided by the ethnicity. It has been observed that Caucasians have very thin hair. However the number of hair is greater in the inhabitants of Caucasus region. The hair of Asian people are thick, resilient and coarse. Their hair allow them to bear the heat of the sun easily and to adapt to extremes of temperature. The African Americans also have less hair.

Different types of hair protect the people of different ethnic regions in diverse ways. The hair of the African are coiled that are very helpful for keeping their head cool in hot weather. The hair of the northern Europeans are very dense so they help them to survive very cold climatic conditions. Those who live in different regions of the earth have different types of hair that help them to survive in their region in a better way. Some regions are drier, some are moist, some are cold and some other places are warmer. All these variations in the environment and climate contribute towards the development of hair types that are more favorable to the inhabitants of that place.
