subject: Proper Way Of Caring For The Ears [print this page]

Youth ushers in many privileges and the most priceless one is clear hearing. But then the hearing ability diminishes by age 30, for some. But as soon as adults get to 65 years, they experience sever hearing loss, and 1 out of every 6 persons experience this. To date, more and more Americans suffer from hearing loss and what's more shocking about this statistics is that these 20 million Americans could have prevented such a condition back then.

But then this one third rise in hearing problem could be caused by what? It has been established that excessive noise is the main culprit. But unlike nerve deafness, noise damage is preventable and this is good to hear. Try to assess whether the noise you are hearing is one that can take away part of or all of your hearing, or if it is just an annoying racket. Loudness of the noise measured in decibels, determining what kind of noise it is, its distance and the duration of exposure to the racket for hours in a day up to months and years should be duly established.

Exposure to noise is never healthy or pleasant but those who got exposed to it for a short while and are suffering from temporary hearing loss can expect it to return after a while. A result of repeated, sustained and frequent exposure to loud noise, total hearing loss still varies depending on the amount of exposure and also the volume. A rocket launch attains the higher decibel range at 180 while the lowest is 0, which is the lowest sound audible to humans. Hearing loss is permanent and inevitable at 180 decibels noise without any ear protection. Two extremes dominate the usual noises we here everyday.

In a quiet office or living room, 40 decibels could be the most accurate rating while that of a busy traffic or a noisy restaurant could be 70 decibels. Higher sounds will place you in bigger trouble.

For instance, 80 decibels represent an alarm clock that is two feet away, or perhaps factory noise. A lot of harm can be caused once exposed to such sounds for eight straight hours. Such is a great incentive as you do not hit the alarm snooze button so much.

In two hours, hearing problems can happen after being too close to a chain saw at work or blasting stereo headphones, while under eight hours, damage can occur thanks to shop tools, lawn mowers or truck traffic. Immediate damage can occur with noise that rates 120 decibels that reduce noise levels by 30 as it is fraught with instant danger, and examples are being right in front speaker during a concert, maintaining close proximity to a strangely loud thunderclap or sandblasting. Apart from causing pain the ear, some gunshot types or jet plane noise when too close can rob you off your hearing totally or sometimes partially.

And your best bet is? Always protect your ears and be far from noise. Circumstances threatening to the hearing must always be reduced. Your television and stereo volume levels must constantly be in check.

Steer clear from uncontrollable and excessively noisy situations. With dangerous noise levels inevitable, it is a must to either space out or shorten the time of exposure. It is a must to put on any ear protector, be it an ear plug or ear muff. These can bring down noise down to 30 decibels and they are also economical.
