subject: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize Celebrates Its Anniversary [print this page] On March 15 2010 another Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize award ceremony took place in Berlin. This was a 25th anniversary award ceremony. Every year since 1986 the scientists working in Germany are awarded with Leibniz Prize for the prominent achievements in different disciplines. Every year 10 prizes are presented. Leibniz Program which started at 1985 aims at providing better conditions for the work of outstanding scientists and better funding for their projects. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize is the most prestigious and honorable science prize in Germany and probably the second in the world after the famous Nobel Prize.
The Price of Leibniz Prize
The honorability of Leibniz Prize is added upon by the funds the winner gets this is a considerable sum of money up to 2.5 mln euros given to each Leibniz laureate. Unlike Nobel Prize winners, those awarded with Leibniz Prize can not spend these funds on their personal needs this is the grant to be spent within 7 years on the accounting of science projects development. However, the laureates have the right to spend this money on their own research or choose the projects they would like to support themselves.
Special Event
This year's ceremony, as has been said, was a special one. Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Prize first issued in 1986 by Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Scientific Society) celebrated its 25 years anniversary this year. To observe this event a special anniversary book was published which contains the history of the Leibniz Prize foundation and ceremonies from 1986 to 2010 and the names and achievements of all 303 of its winners.
Professor Matthias Kleiner, the head of DFG stated that Leibniz Prize is called to award the scientists with worldwide recognition and possibilities to move forward their studies for their courage and strife to discoveries.
