subject: How To Choose A Birdbath [print this page]

Birdbaths will essentially be a great aid in enticing a variety of species of birds to your garden.

As well as nesting boxes and bird feeders a birdbath is one of the greatest attractions a bird will have to your garden; this is because water is absolutely essential for a bird to exist. Not only do they require water in order to keep themselves hydrated, they also use it to cleanse themselves and to play in.

There are many varied bird baths available for purchase, they can range from a shallow bowl of water, to a heated birdbath, or even solar powered.

Pedestal Bird baths are the most readily available, they will not only attract birds to your garden, they will also provide an attractive garden feature. When choosing a place for the bird bath you must make sure it is situated in a position where predators are unable to hide.

Heated Bird baths are a good way to let birds bathe all year round and to have a source of fresh water as in areas without fresh water they are forced to consume snow for moisure. Smaller breeds of birds may sometimes be grateful for a heated bird bath as bigger birds can push them away from puddles or other areas where fresh water can be found. There are different ways of heating these bird baths, like using mains adaptors, and they often come with squirrel proofing to prevent squirrels taking over the baths and terrifying the birds.

Solar Bird baths also an cheap way of supplying water for the birds as they use the energy from the sun to power a pump, which filters the water and keeps the water flowing. This is the same as fountain bird baths which encourage birds by utilising their natural attraction to the sound of dripping water.

It is important to regularly clean out your bird bath as many birds may carry diseases, they are also affected by mosquitoes who require stagnant water in order to breed and can carry diseases which are detrimental to birds. It is vital to empty out the water in your bird bath at least once a week in the summertime so that the birds can stay healthy.
