But most of us don't really know the difference between the flushing ports of the different Outboard engines. In this article, I will provide you with 3 engine samples.
The Honda Outboard manual states: "Thoroughly clean and flush the outboard motor with fresh water after operation in dirty water or salt water." Honda proposes using the flush port connector on the side of the engine for flushing and the emergency-stop switch clip be detached so there is no chance of the engine starting while you're near the propeller.
The Honda flushing instructions are simple. You first detach the port connector, then attach the garden hose to the flush port connector, turn on the water and let it flow through the engine for 10 minutes at the least. Disconnect the garden hose and attach the port connector as soon as you flushed the engine.
For Suzuki Outboard owners, there are two methods to flush your engine. The first is to buy an ear-muff style flusher and the second is to use the flush-plug adaptor on the rear of the engine cowling. With the ear-muff style flusher, Suzuki recommends turning the garden hose on to get enough water to flow so that plenty of extra water ebbs from around the rubber cups. It's best to remove the propeller before starting the engine at idle speed for a few minutes and then turn the engine off and remove the hose and flusher.
With the flush-plug adaptor, simply detach it and attach the garden hose into that port and turn the water on. You don't have to start the engine but simply let the water flow for at least five minutes. When you're finished, detach the hose and connect the plug. It's easier and safer than using the first method.
For Yamaha Outboard, its flushing instruction states: "Perform this procedure right after operation for the most thorough flushing." and "after shutting off the engine, unscrew the garden hose connector from the fitting on the bottom cowling." Attach the garden hose, turn the water on, and let it flow for 15 minutes. The Yamaha Outboard manual gives a warning: "CAUTION: Do not perform this procedure while the engine is running. The water pump may be damaged and severe damage from overheating can result."
To thoroughly understand your Outboard engine including its flushing instructions, take time to read your owner's manual if you still have it.
