Someone who is just getting started probably doesn't really have a style yet. Height and weight will need to be considered when choosing a board, however. Many beginners start out with what is referred to as flatland skimming. Even with this, there are still some tricks that you can learn to do. Some of these are adapted from those used in skateboarding.

Skimming on waves is considered to be more advanced. If you start out with a board that works well for flatland skimming, you may want to change if you advance to the waves. One thing that can differ between boards is the nose lift, also called the rocker. The type of curve that the board has will affect the control that you have. This, in turn, will affect the kinds of tricks that you can do.

Riding a skimboard can be dangerous so take the time to do a little research into which is going to be best for you to start out with. You may want to start out with something basic for flatlanding. You can keep it simple until you are really ready for more challenging skimming.
