It isn't easy building trust after cheatingIt isn't easy building trust after cheating. It's hard to let go and really work on your marriage when there is this voice in the back of your head asking "what if it happens again?" Unfortunately, you can't just snap your fingers and find yourself at the same level of trust you previously enjoyed.

So what can you do to get back the trust you need to really make your marriage work? There happen to be five things you can do that really will help you trust your cheating spouse again. See what a difference they can make for the two of you by applying them right to your marriage right away.

1) Take small steps forward. It's important to remember that trust and faith in your spouse took a long time to build the first time around. You can't expect to be able to give it all back overnight. Start small and work your way up to the bigger trust issues in time.

2) Don't take your frustrations out on your partner. While your spouse is the tempting target, especially since it was your spouse that cheated, it will be counterproductive to get angry with your spouse because you are having a hard time trusting again. When you do get frustrated make sure that it doesn't come across as criticism or assigning blame.

3) Communicate well and often. The heart of trust is communication. Many trust issues are born of miscommunication or misunderstandings. Make sure that you both are on the same page and know what's going on so that there aren't any mixed messages or crossed wires to contend with on top of the trust issues that are already frustrating to you.

4) Understand that practice makes perfect. It may take more time than you would like to work up to the level of trust you'd like to have with your spouse but the more you practice acts of trust the easier and more natural they will become. So get busy practicing small and not so small acts of trust today.

5) Make sure you are both happy at home. Marriages are partnerships and in order to operate at its best you must both be happy at home. If you are both happy at home there will be a greatly reduced likelihood that one or the other of you will be inclined to cheat. Think of all the things you can do to make your spouse happy and learn to ask for the things you need from your spouse so that you're happy too.
