subject: Mobile phone is ready for the next Snowpocalypse? [print this page] Remember that last year when a huge snowstorm hit the east coast? I do. My wife found herself trapped in Washington for 6 days in anticipation of the flight. It could be worse, however, at least stay in the hotel was not to lose power, and was able to keep her in touch via mobile phone. But what if it went from bad to worse? What if the infrastructure does not run, and the power went out? Her phone smartphone would be the first thing to do. With a big ol screen and radio in the dirt, it is difficult to keep these things from the wall for too long.
What can I do to make sure that they do not lose connectivity
W recently on the CNN article This is pretty much the situation: there is no electricity, and you do not have to charge the phone. There is no active cell tower, but its too far(or just too slammed), to make a relationship and call for help.
RecommendationCNN is one we wholeheartedly support: Go go gadget cheap-backup-phone! Something with low energy consumption and more importantly, texting capabilities. It(usually) has less power to send a text than they initiate and maintain connections, and networks can(again, usually) handle more than the text at the same time may be voice calls. Case in point: During Hurricane Katrina voice services declined, but many people were unable to send texts and were in fact saved as a result.
So what phone should I get? In recent Engadget podcast, co-hosted by Myriam Joire(otherwise known as tnkgrl ) recommends Motorola F3 , which uses E-Ink to display basic information. Recommended? Any cheapo, feature lighting pre-paid phone can be found.
