subject: Are You Tired of Losing at Starcraft 2? - 3 Tips for Beginners Who Want to Improve at Starcraft 2 Strategy [print this page] Do you lose a lot at Starcraft 2? Hey we have all likely not been the best (or even been the worst) at something. For 99% of us that is going to be a simple fact of life; however, that does not mean that you cannot improve (even dramatically) to the point where you can actually be competitive.
Here 3 tips to help you improve rapidly at Starcraft 2:
1. Do the Campaign on Brutal.
2. Do not bother playing against the computer.
3. Play on the practice league
1. Doing the campaign on brutal is challenging but by no means impossible. Let's be honest though, if you want to do the campaign on normal you could probably do the whole thing with SCVs. Come on, normal is way too easy! Do it on brutal especially if you have not yet completed the campaign. It makes the whole process more rewarding, and actually challenging. Doing the Wings of Liberty campaign on brutal will FORCE you to improve, in order to complete a lot of the missions. Some of the missions will be a bit of a grind, but suck it up space cowboy! Through this process you learn about the uses of different units, improve on your micro skills, and generally just start to kick more butt. Whether or not you have already completed the campaign is somewhat (alright hugely) important to consider here. If you have beat the campaign already you may just want to move on to the practice league and custom games.
2. As you may have noticed, this point may seem somewhat contradictory to the first one. What you should take away from this is that doing custom games with the computer is a bit of a waste of time. Yeah it can be fun, and you know what you are going to get; however, that is precisely the problem. When you play against a human opponent you do not know what you are going to get. Trust me, just buck up Dorothy and skip playing against the computer (on custom games). Yeah, you will lose more matches, but that is a matter of imaginary pride.
3. Now, some people may want to overstep the 'training wheels' of the practice league. There are some good reasons for using it though. Firstly, many new players feel some anxiety about losing. Playing in the practice league can alleviate that anxiety and encourage you to just get in there and play. The bigger point here is that you should be playing against dynamic human opponents. Yeah, you may get some players who are about as good as your six year old brother, cousin, or whatever, and at least the computer will quit and say "gg" if you have clearly won. Human players, however, have variable and unpredictable strats. That makes playing against other humans the ideal training ground for any player. So, buckle up, be prepared to lose a few matches and learn critically and constructively from every single match.
The most important element of improving at anything, including Starcraft 2, is to take it on critically. You have to be prepared to scrap what you have tried and determined to actually improve. I would encourage you not to waste time simply doing what is easiest without struggling to figure out what is best (or how to play/compete/learn best).
