subject: How Safe Is It To Get Large Volume Liposuction? [print this page]

Everyone wants to look like a starEveryone wants to look like a star. But with movie stars getting thinner and thinner and with obesity and overweight statistics rising in America, that seems to be an unattainable ideal.

However, some liposuction doctors offer what initially sounds like a dream come true: they promise that they can remove large amounts of fat from your body, helping you to go down a number of clothing sizes all at once. This sort of drastic fat removal is referred to as "large volume liposuction," and it is no secret why people want it. However, it is important to ask whether or not this procedure is safe.

The definition of large volume liposuction is somewhat vague. Different surgeons can mean different things by the term. However, one definition that a lot of people seem to be able to agree on is a liposuction procedure which removes more than 5 liters of body tissue from a patient (including fat, blood and other substances).

A number of experts remain divided as to the safeness and advisability of large volume liposuction. Some declare that it is both safe and egalitarian, making a trim figure possible for people who never would have been able to even come near it with diet or exercise. However, others say that it is extremely dangerous and should never be performed.

Still others state that it is possible to perform it safely in theory but express concerns about how it translates in reality. Legally, any physician can perform cosmetic surgery. Sometimes people who do not have the proper skills, training and experience want to get a chunk of the growing liposuction market and begin performing cosmetic procedures. This is always dangerous, and it is always important to find a properly qualified surgeon when you're looking for cosmetic surgery.

However, in the case of large volume liposuction, it is even more imperative that a surgeon know what he or she is doing. Because it takes so much more out of a person's body, large volume liposuction can be much more traumatic for the patient's body, and it is much easier for large-scale complications to arise.

Even surgeons who are accustomed to performing small-grade liposuctions can be caught woefully off-guard when attempting to remove a much larger amount of fat, and when it happens the results can be disastrous.

If you are determined to get a large volume liposuction, be even more careful than you ordinarily would be in selecting your surgeon. Find out about their qualifications, their experience level, and find out how many large scale fat removal procedures they have performed. See if you can find out how often they experience complications, and check on the internet to see if there's any bad press about the surgeon. Do everything you can to find out as much as possible about your desired procedure and the surgeon who will be operating on you. In such a delicate procedure, you want to make sure you're in the very best hands possible.
