Win the Race Against Boredom in the Classroom

When learning is fun and exciting, many amazing things can be observed; students from diverse backgrounds and cultures working together; boys and girls providing support and collaborating with one another in the sharing of ideas and knowledge; and older students serving as positive role models for their younger team mates. According to Dr. H. A. Hasan of Spalding University in Louisville, Kentucky, who is the creator and founder of the hydroplane program, this is what was observed when kids were challenged with the unknown, but were given the tools to figure it out. This behavior management strategy has proven to be extremely successful.

Students were then provided with the opportunity to use the fruits of their labor by putting them to the test utilizing all of the skills they learned. This opportunity came in the form of a Regatta, or boat race, where youngsters put their Rocket-Powered Foam Board Model Hydroplanes in a race to the top, in the hopes of becoming the Spirit Cup Champion.

Through this alternative teaching strategy, students who initially complained of boredom in school went on to exhibit great interest in learning. Students were so deeply involved in the building of their hydroplanes that they didnt have time to engage in negative behaviors in order to stay occupied, Hasan said. It was just that simple!! This is what we learned, according to Hasan: Students get bored with books after a while and need change, and this change comes in the form of project-based learning. Ha Learning Strategies has educational programs that support this change, stemming from a 2-Hours-a-Week Rewards Incentive Curriculum, to a 36-Week Course.
