subject: Internet Marketing - How Does the Dow Breaking 11,000 Affect Your Marketing? [print this page]

Unless you've been living in a cave, you've probably heard that the DOW just broke 11,000. So much for the recession. Or is it? A lot of people are dancing in the streets right now and marketers are getting ready to spend some big money on some big product launches. Well, before you mortgage the house and your first born, you might want to read this article. Things are not as rosy as you might want to believe.

I am very fortunate. I have a lot of friends in this business. It took me many years to make them so I hang onto them for dear life. Having friends entitles you to certain things, like knowing what's going on with John Doe down the street. I'm not going to mention any names in this article so don't ask. But I am going to tell you some things that might change your mind about the turn of events in the economy.

Copywriters who I know are telling me that big name marketers are coming to them for improvements on their sales pages because things aren't so good. They're looking for any tweaks they can to bump conversions...even if it's just a percent. Yeah, so much for no recession.

In addition to that, I'm getting a sense of desperation in the air from all the big ticket items that are suddenly either going on sale for peanuts or being flat out given away. Look, I've been at this long enough to know that even old products still sell because new people are coming into the marketplace every single day. There is no reason to discount these things so much. I sure as heck don't.

And finally, I'm noticing at the forums that people are more testy than ever. Tempers are at an all time high and nobody seems to be really happy. Okay, maybe a few people are. I know I am. But I'm a strange duck. See, I don't have to make a million dollars a year to be happy.

Okay, so what do I think you should do with the DOW info? I think you should toss it in the trash where it belongs. People are still out of work. Here in my home state of NJ, the governor just made it so that hundreds of school teachers are going to lose their jobs. Think they care about the DOW?

My suggestion is to stay conservative right now. I'm not saying to panic or anything like that. But you might want to reconsider new investment at this time, especially if you're thinking about a big ticket product launch. I don't think now is the time to be going in that direction. Let's see where the DOW settles. Let's see if it continues to go up or if this was just a temporar
