They permeate our society only because we, as a herd, allow them to. It feels much more convenient to take for granted what we hear from a multitude of mouths than to constantly question and do the research ourselves. This absorption of erroneous information however will only lead to unproductive trial & error, creating vicious cycles of suffering in the long run. Such is the case in dealing with acne and believe it; the price of misinformation could be costly! Taking into account the concept that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line, let's help make the line from zits to clear skin as straight as possible, by first derailing three of the most absurd acne myths in existence. Knowing this general information will contribute to ultimately paving a shorter and clearer path to the correct solution for acne, whatever that may be for each individual. "Acne is the result of poor hygiene. While this is what it may seem like on the surface, it is simply not the case. It usually originates from people who've never had an acne problem before, or had so very little of it that it didn't affect them. A more legitimate statement would be "Poor hygiene does not cause acne, but it can aggravate it. Uncleanliness on the surface of the skin is not the direct cause of pimples. If that were true, constant washing and scrubbing would have taken care of all those pesky lesions, but instead, it tends to have the opposite effect making matters worse! Once and for all, one major cause of acne is overproduction of oil (called "sebum") in the skin. Now when something goes wrong and the skin does not properly flush out this oil, an inflammation occurs (what we would know as the redness and bumps), as a result of the oil being trapped or "clogged" within the sebaceous follicle. It is important to understand that this outcome originates from processes going on within the body, which generate the excess sebum, not from external factors like poor hygiene! "Acne is just a part of adolescence. Just leave it alone and let it run its course. It's not going to last for the rest of your life. When you grow up, it will subside and disappear. To be quite frank, it CAN and probably WILL last you the rest of your life, in the form of scars, if not looked after immediately. That's right, acne, especially severe, can later turn into scars and impressions within the skin in the form of "craters. The idea that only adolescents get acne is ridiculous because it has been well documented that many people still deal with acne well into their 50s and beyond. This would be known as adult acne. So folks, just like cancer in a way, acne does not discriminate. The majority of people who suffer from it may be the younger extract from the populace, but that doesn't mean that it won't happen into adult life, because it can and has already done so to a multitude of people! It is best to act NOW, to prevent those scars and permanent damage to self-image. "Eating chocolate and junk food gives you zits. Diet and its effect on acne is debatable but this chocolate and fast food angle is an unfortunate result of rumors that are perpetually passed amongst younger social networks, until they become accepted truths. This is speculation at best, being based on the mere appearance of these foods. Junk food is greasy and grease brings about zits. Chocolate is just chocolate and didn't you know chocolate gives you zits? Take note of the sarcasm there. It is too much of a generalization and if a breakout did occur close to the time these two such foods were consumed, there would be a better explanation to it than just pointing the finger at two foods. It's much more complicated than that! Three silly acne myths have therefore just been exposed. Again, it is relatively safe to assume that people whove never had to deal with acne in their lives - or have dealt with it very little - often perpetuate these myths. They don't have a clue on how the afflicted people may feel. Hopefully this article has helped to bring about some awareness amongst those who know little about acne, or have had false misconceptions about it all along. Please realize that it is not an easy thing to have to live and deal with acne. Those who have it need support, not erroneous advice!
