subject: Are You Protecting Your Privacy On The Internet? [print this page]

Privacy is something that many people want to have. When you go on the internet, it's harder to have the privacy that many people expect to have. Find out what you need to be doing that will help you to protect your privacy even more when on the internet.

The best thing that you can do to protect your privacy is to never put anything online that you don't want anyone else to find out. This means that you keep this information off of sites regardless what sites you think that you trust. If you never put it online, no one will ever find it.

Don't give out your personal information to people you don't know online. You might keep things like your address, phone number, and other personal information private. Make sure you really know who someone is before giving out things like this especially over the internet.

Use a secondary address when you are online for sign ups and and newsletters online. This keeps people that you might not trust with you email. If this account gets spammed, you can just get a new one.

Keep your machine protected from spyware. Spyware is one of the main problems that people have with losing private information while using the internet. These malicious pieces of software spy on your habits and can steal your login information. Be sure that you run spyware protection on your machine at all times. This is done with spyware protection software that you can either purchase or download online for free.

Shut down online accounts when you are done with them. People can later hack these and get your personal information if you don't do this.

Delete your history from your personal machine. This isn't absolutely required, but if someone gets your computer they could tell where you go online and possibly compromise your online accounts. Without any history, it's harder to know where you have been online
