The first flying car in history was designed and created by Glenn Curtis but this car wasn't actually able to fly but just hop. The one that created the car that could actually fly was Waldo Waterman. The car was produced back in 1937 when it also took its first flight.
People started to imagine after World War II that the next means of transportation in the 21st century will be the flying car. The descriptions of these types of cars that date back in those days seem taken from a sci-fi novel. Various companies and persons made several attempts in order to create such cars and at some point to take them to mass production.
One of the most important manufacturers in the car industry began to be seriously interested in creating such a car so they condoned a study to determine whether building a flying car was feasible. After some extensive research and documentation they realized that they disposed both of the technological means and the financial support to create it. So, this time another problem had to be solved, namely the regulatory issues.
But when they tried to solve this problem they realized that building the car that could fly was actually the easy part of this process and that the legislatory measures were a lot more difficult to deal with. If the project continued there would have been the need to create an air traffic control, laws and regulations regarding the altitude that you could fly at, someone had to monitorize those people that didn't had a flying license and so on. This is why the project was put on hold.
In our days we still use the car in order to go to work or to school, that is, until something else is invented. However, if you don't have your own car just yet, you can easily rent one.
