In 2003 the United Kingdom TT variants become the world's first user of a dual clutch transmission configured for a right-hand drive vehicle, although the outright world first for a road car equipped with a dual clutch transmission was claimed earlier by a Volkswagen Group platform-mate, the left hand drive Volkswagen Golf Mk4 R32.
There are three turbo petrol engines a 208bhp 2.0-litre, the 270bhp 2.0 TTS and the 335bhp five-cylinder TT RS. All are fast, the RS especially so. Also available is a diesel choice - a 168bhp 2.0. It's strong, smooth, revs freely and delivers brisk performance, yet still returns over 50mpg. All engines have six-speed manual gearboxes as standard and most are available with an excellent S tronic six-speed semi-auto 'box.
