Many consider purchasing a convertible to be something seasonal, this of course solely relies on you geographical presence on this earth. The fun and exciting driving experience of a convertible cannot be substituted by and hard top car. This comprehensive top 5 list, summarizes my personal all-time favourite convertibles on the market.
5. Mazda MX-5
The MX-5 is renowned for being a nippy, enjoyable convertible that boasts both good looks and power. The key to an enjoyable sports car is balance. The MX-5 handling, breaking, sifting & acceleration all work in harmony to offer the driver a pleasantly exciting driving experience. Mazda's rear-wheeled convertible is a cost effective solution for those who wish to delve into a convertible without a hefty price tag.
The MX-5 is a very comfortable drive, as it's an everyday car. The boot space may not be that large, but then again most convertibles are not designed to accommodate the luggage that's tied to a family holiday.
The two motors available to the MX05 is a 1.8 litre, which doesn't do the convertible much justice as the chassis is more than capable of handling a lot more power. The 2-0Litre version is far better suited for the nippy Mazda, with a top speed of 131mph, and a more entertaining 200bhp, the MX-5 loses virtually nothing in pace or handling.
The typical clichs that are associated with the MX-5 should not deter you from purchasing such a fun, exciting and quality built convertible.
4. Chevy Corvette
High tech and high performance, if this is what you're looking for in a convertible, the corvette will not disappoint. The 2009 Chevrolet corvette massive LS3 engine gives supercar like acceleration while providing useful torque for everyday driving.
Corvette has a distinct, empowering, rugged look. The beauty of this convertible is one of its main selling points, but don't let this beastly exterior fool you. The interior may seem to be comfortable, well-tailored and neat. But the technology seems to be a mishmash of different manufacturers, the Bluetooth system lacks modern features, and the Bose audio system lacks clarity. These may only be slight setbacks for some, but the price of this visually appealing convertible should reflect that damage of buying one.
The engine itself is very efficient, with good fuel economy you won't be regretting driving to and from work every day. The touring configuration of the Chevrolet Corvette makes it an easy car to drive in almost any situation.
3. Volkswagen EOS
The 2010 EOS Convertible even at entry-level has 121bhp and a 1.4 TSi which is fairly quick. However, the 2.0 turbo engine makes the EOS much more fun and a lot pacier for those longer stretches of road. The comfortable ride is based on Volkswagens efforts to try and design a convertible that is resistant to slight ditches or squirms that most road surfaces will throw at any driver.
Looks may not be the EOS's forte, but it certainly does boast uniqueness about it. The Metal roofs do a better job of cutting out exterior noise, which other rivals with fabric hoods can't achieve. The sports model has much firmer suspensions and larger alloys wheels, which really finish off the design well. The handling is similar to golf, with its tight grip to the road, you definitely feel as ease when driving the EOS.
2. Jaguar XKR 2010
Most sports convertibles aim to go fast, get the driver more involved with driving or show boat its elegance. The Jaguar XKR crosses all of these continents, and does so in style. Jaguar has a prestigious reputation to uphold and therefore the price tag attached to this convertible is not going to differ from its top of the range hard tops. The long slender curves of the XKR screams sophistication, such an adjective as fun can only loosely be associated with this jaguar. Its sheer presence dominates any road it voyages down, as well as its attractive looks the sound of the supercharged engine purrs so beautifully.
As to expect from Jaguar, the interior is full leather, equipped with the latest gadgetry that any executive or parent wealthy college student would expect. The beautiful trim and feature enhancements inside are highlighted by the JaguarDrive Selector, which is very neatly and elegantly placed in the centre console.
Overall if price is no boundary, the XKR would be the convertible of choice. Unfortunately not all are able to justify the steep cost of such a machine, no matter how graceful this convertible is.
1. Mercedes Benz SL500
Although this may be an older convertible, personally I have always though Mercedes to have a slick concept of what car design should be about. The longer front, the shorter back and the subtly curves all contribute to an atheistically pleasing car. Although purchasing a convertible cannot be based solely on its appearance, the immaculate Benz houses a huge 5.0 litre V8 engine that has been coupled with a smooth five gear automatic gearbox. The Mercedes also has an accommodating boot, fantastically designed interior and exceptional handling due to its well-tuned suspension.
Although a brand new Sl500 may be a bit costly you can easily pick up a reliable and well-kept used Mercedes Benz from a good retailer. Overall I believe the SL500 to be the best convertible for the price you have to pay. The SL is unarguably a supreme all-round performer when It comes to the convertible market.
