subject: Does My Organisation Need a Website? [print this page] Is it possible to run a successful business without a website? Andrew Stacey from Activ Web Design in Trowbridge tries to find out.
Although almost every big, successful business has their own website many new and small businesses are still resistant to joining the on-line revolution. The reason many give is that they have plenty of customers already and a website would only attract business they are unable to deal with. This seems to be reasonable but in the long term is it really possible?
Let's take the case of a small local builder as an example. He iserecting an extension for one client and has a few smaller jobs for regular customers that he works around his main project. His customers have known him for many years and he relies on an advertisement in a local paper and word of mouth to find new jobs. It seems to be working well at the moment.
There will come a time, however, when his existing client base need no more work done, move away from the area or even go to a competitor for a change. How will these clients be replaced?
It is a fact that most people in the developed world go to the internet first when searching for a product or service. The newspaper advertisement may be useful, but not if your clients do not search the papers for your service any longer; and even if they do find you in the newspaper they may feel that your business has more credibility if your advertisement refers them to a website where they can find out more about you.
Not only to grow your business, but even to keep it at its current level it is becoming more and more essential to be found online.
