subject: What Improvements Have Been Made In The Field Of Liposuction? [print this page]

Liposuction is a relatively new surgery, but its popularity has led to a lot of research on ways to improve the surgery. Some new improvements have been adopted into the traditional method and some methods have broken away to become high tech new alternatives.

A lot of people are getting liposuction these days, more each year. It's a cosmetic surgery that is even attracting greater numbers of men.

The original techniques were somewhat experimental, and many of the changes that have come about are simple improvements that have made the surgery safer. Recipients of the surgery are having better experiences now than they did in the past.

According to the traditional method, small incisions are made and a cannula is inserted into them. Originally, no fluid was pumped into the cavity and the result was slightly gruesome.

When no fluids were pumped in, there was a lot of loss, and at least as much blood was sucked out as fat!

Over time, it was discovered that blood loss could be minimized and the procedure could be made generally safer if the fluid were pumped into the cavity throughout the surgery.

The fluid is a mixture of several things, including anesthetics and some epinephrine to cause blood vessels to constrict, slowing the flow of blood in the affected area.

Surgeons found other ways to improve the traditional method, including putting an eight to ten pound limit on the amount of fat that can be removed.

Simply improving the traditional method was not enough for some researchers. They began looking for completely new techniques and alternatives to liposuction.

They came up with the tumescent technique. It involves flooding the cavity with large amounts of fluid to make it easier for the surgeon to break up the fat cells.

Some surgeons now use laser technology to break up fat cells, and others use ultrasonic sound waves for the same purpose.

Vaser liposuction and Mesotherapy are techniques that utilize medications that act according to body chemistry to encourage the body to break down its own fat cells.

There is always some debate over whether traditional liposuction is the best way to go. Alternatives are generally more expensive and there is some controversy surrounding them. Some wonder whether the alternatives are actually improvements. If the results are not actually any better, why should liposuction recipients pay more?

In any case, more surgeons have experience with the traditional method. Having liposuction done by an experienced surgeon makes it much safer, and that may make traditional liposuction the best method.
