The foot injury quickly became more serious than first suggested and Williams underwent surgery in late July, pulling out of subsequent tournaments in Istanbul (July 26-Aug. 1), Ohio (Aug. 9-15) and Montreal (Aug. 16-22) for recuperation.
While she's still healing from the foot injury that has had her out of commission for most of July and August, Williams is still hopeful she will fully recover in time for the U.S. Open in late August. Williams leads the entry list going in, and her agent Jill Smoller expressed hope for her condition, telling The Associated Press, "Right now, we're taking it a day at a time. She's resting and recovering. She's a fast healer."
Serena Williams is a name that sells U.S. Open tennis tickets each and every year, and the tennis powerhouse has been a top contender at the Open since 1999, when she won her first title in Queens against Martina Hingis 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

For now, things are looking good for Serena Williams to overcome injury and battle her way through another U.S. Open, and the action all kicks off Aug. 30 in New York.
