subject: Facebook Search Optimization? It's Coming! [print this page]

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is a very familiar term if you own or manage a website (at least it should be!). Companies and brands are constantly optimizing their sites to satisfy the almighty Google (and of course its smaller counterparts, Yahoo and MSN) to compete for the top ranking positions. After all, if you're not listed on the first page, you're virtually invisible to searchers (89% of searchers don't go past the first page). Indeed, optimizing for Google has been a major task for all websites and companies looking to take advantage of organic, search traffic. However, it looks like you might just have to start optimizing for another search engine: Facebook.

In March 2010, Facebook became the most visited site in the United States, dethroning the great Google which previously held that crown (see -weblogs.hitwise.com/heather-dougherty/2010/03/facebook_reaches_top_ranking_i.html).

Facebook has recently launched its own search engine called "Open Graph." That's right. You read it correctly. Open Graph will be Facebook's very own search engine, so the SEO industry should start getting ready to optimize for yet another fourth engine. Here are the details thus far regarding Open Graph:

1. A "Like" button to install on pages that Facebook users can click. These "Like" buttons shouldn't be too new to you as they have been finding their ways all over the Web in recent months, generating their fair share of popularity.

2. A set of tags that allow webmasters to describe to Facebook what their site is about (think meta description tags).

Like Google's search algorithm which is heavily based on "link popularity" (the number of sites linking to a site helps to determine its ranking), Open Graph will be based on "Likes."

Facebook has now successfully implemented pay-per-click, pay-per-impression, and now its own search engine. Google should watch its back! This means that those who jump on this boat early may reap the benefits before their competitors.

SEO isn't the cure, but it is another advertising channel that certainly shouldn't be overlooked as it can generate large amounts of free, targeted traffic.
