The Board of Governors of the Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad (IIM-A), on Saturday decided to implement 27 per cent OBC reservation in various phases over the next three years.

"Six per cent OBC reservation will come into force from this academic year. In the second year, reservation will be increased to 15 per cent and in the third year, the entire quota of 27 per cent will be implemented," IIM-A Director Sameer Barua said.

The Board of Governors meeting headed by Chairman Vijaypat Singhania took the decision on the quota issue after the Union Human Resource Development Ministry's communication to the management institutes to implement 27 per cent reservations from this year.

"Six per cent increase means 17 OBC students will be admitted to the IIM-A this year in post-graduate programmes, including post-graduate programme in agri-business management," Barua said.

"Simultaneously, 17 seats will be increased for the general category as per the Supreme Court order. The apex court stated that the number of seats for general category should not be affected due to implementation of the OBC quota," Barua added.

The IIM, Ahmedabad, will declare its final list of candidates for general category on May 1, the director said, adding that the list of OBC category candidates was likely to be declared in the next two weeks.

He further said that the the institute has asked the OBC candidates to provide details of their status with regard to "creamy layer" in keeping with the Supreme Court's directive to exclude the creamy layer from the benefits of the reservation.

"We have put up the necessary things on our website," Barua said.

The IIMs which were to release the final admission list on April 11, had put on hold their admission process seeking a communication from the HRD Ministry following the decision of the Supreme Court on the OBC quota.
