Perhaps one would not disagree with me if I were to say that our life is to live in order to reach the destiny we are called for. Character plays a significant role in making us what we are. In other words character defines our life. Surely it wouldn't be wrong to say that our good character saves our life.
At this juncture one could be confused as to know, how character manages to save one's life. If so what aspect of life? Can the character relieve one from ones financial, economic burden of life? After all in most of the cases it is the economic and the financial burden of life that gradually kills people. Can character save one from one's moral aspect of life? These are some of the questions that randomly come to our mind as we ponder over the adage "Character saves Life."
By the way what is "character" that can save our life? John Wooden has something beautiful to say about character. He says "Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are." Character is our real self. The product of our character is what we often mistake for our real self. Abraham Lincoln says "Character is like a tree and reputation like a shadow. The shadow is what we think of it; the tree is the real thing."
One's character is not defined by one's rare act of bravery or charity; rather it is the repeated act of perseverance and persistence.
A good character can save a situation: Those that have watched "3 idiots" may remember the character "Raju" one of the three who attempted a suicide. He was supposed to be last in every exam that was conducted. His principal had almost predicted that he would never get selected in any of the interviews. But then when he appeared for the interview, he impressed the interviewers so much not by his intelligence; rather by is character. They admired him for being so honest in him way of going about.
A good character can win over a person: They say girls do not look for handsome boys; they rather look for boys with good character. Gandhi the great freedom fighter faced the British, fought against them, organized Sathyagraha in protest against them and finally managed to attain freedom from them. Gandhi own over the British neither by his physical strength, nor by his intellectual ability. It was by his character, a good character. Gandhi not only succeeded to win over persons, in fact he own over the whole nation.
A good character can go on live: Great persons in the history are remembered today because of their contribution to the humanity which was the outcome of their character. Persons of good character may not go on live physically. They live in the hearts of people.

In a world of technology and development, where people have hardly any time to look at each other and talk to each other, persons like Gandhi, Nelson Mandela and Abraham Lincoln remind us that there is hope. If the world has been changed, it is not by the intellectual or the dictators. The world has seen its new pages of beauty and prosperity by the men of character, a good character.
