subject: 5 Common Symptoms Associated With Allergies in Children [print this page]

Doctors find it very difficult to diagnose allergies in adults. This task becomes all the more complicated when it comes to children. Every kind of allergy has many symptoms, which can be a pointer to the particular condition. Since children are small and they have limited powers of expression, they are not able to exactly pin point the exact symptoms to the doctor. But there are certain symptoms of allergies, which clearly point towards an allergy. These symptoms manifest themselves in certain ways through which we can clearly make out that the condition, which is prevailing, is an allergy and nothing else. Some of these symptoms are:

Dark circles below the eyes Sometimes a mild form of discoloration takes place below the eyes and they start looking like raccoon eyes or black eyes and they are also known as allergic shiners by doctors. The portion of the skin below the skin starts looking darker since the blood flow to the area affected by the sinus has increased. The presence of these dark circles is not due to lack of sleep. Shiners, which appear due to allergies, are often combined with an extra fold of skin below the lower eyelids that are known as the Denni Morgan lines. These lines have been named after the doctors who discovered them and established the relationship between the lines and the allergies.

Allergic Eczema This condition will first manifest itself as contact dermatitis, which is the way that the skin reacts to an irritant. But this condition is connected to allergic reactions. Rashes start appearing on the fold of the knees, elbows, eyes and also the face. The skin becomes very dry and starts itching and scratching and also turns red. There are many people who have allergies and suffer from the same symptoms.

Regular sinus infections When the body has a severe allergic reaction, then many more body fluids are produced. These fluids will block all passages and the bacteria and germs, which want to leave the body, are unable to do so. Then they attack the tissues in the sinus passage and start spreading infection. These infections normally occur in people who already have allergies because the body becomes weak when it tries to fight the foreign particles, which have entered the body. Hence the immune system of the body becomes weak and the body is unable to fight the disease causing germs. Headaches, nasal blocks and fever are caused due to sinus infections.

Chronic cough Some people start suffering from a dry cough, which does not go away easily, and sometimes phlegm comes into the mouth, which means that extra fluid is being produced in the sinus cavities. Extra sinus fluid gets accumulated due to some kind of allergic reaction. Though cough is a symptom, which can be treated easily, it is better to treat the reason for the occurrence of the cough rather than the cough alone so that you can get rid of the cough and be cured completely. If the cough refuses to get cured despite all attempts, then it is better to consult a doctor since the condition might be something more severe than just an allergy.

Itchy Nose The nose can sense allergens which are placed anywhere within a particular radius and the nose starts itching immediately. This is one perfect indication of the presence of an allergen somewhere in the vicinity and the nose gets blocked like when you have a cold. Many children start rubbing their noses when they have an allergy and this looks like they are saluting and this is also known as the allergy salute. The best way to avoid these allergy symptoms from manifesting themselves is to stay away from the substances, which are causing the allergy. But it is very difficult to determine the causes of the allergy and prevent an allergic reaction from taking place.
