subject: Dealing With A Runtime Error In Java [print this page]

JavaScript is a universal programming language that is used to add interactive features to web sites. If you've ever come across animations, pictures that change when you mouse over them, and even things like validating form data and online calculators, you have utilized JavaScript. However, despite it's interactivity and versatility, JavaScript is still vulnerable to errors.

Runtime Error

A runtime error is an error that occurs while the Java Script code is running, or attempting to run. It could be that there is an error in the code or maybe your PC is running an outdated version of Java.

Your PC's runtime errors could look something like this.

Disabling Java

The first step you need to take in fixing a Java Runtime Error, is to temporarily disable Java in the Internet Browser. To disable Java in Internet Explorer, just...

In your browser window, go to "View" and then "Options" or "Internet Options" depending on which IE. If you don't have these tabs under "View," click on "Tools" and then "Internet Options." Click on the "Security" tab. Click on "Custom Level" and then "Settings" if necessary. Uncheck the "Disable JavaScript" box. Click "OK."

Script Debugging

If you think you are getting errors that don't really apply to you, you can disable script debugging so you won't keep getting script error notifications. Microsoft suggests a quick fix for this.

In Internet Explorer click on the "Tools" menu and then "Internet Options." Click on the "Advanced" tab. Under Settings you can put a check in the box for "Disable script debugging (Internet Explorer)" and "Disable script debugging (Other)." Make sure to uncheck the box for "Display a notification about every script error."

Installing Updated Java

Now, you want to install a newer version of Java. This should update your old version in such a way as to effectively correct the error that had been created. Installing the newest version is also a good way to get rid of the errors while still being able to use the web site to its fullest potential. At Java's webpage...

Go to "Downloads" The recommended download will appear at the top of the screen. You can click on the "Free Java Download" button, or if you have a different operating system, click on "See all Java downloads here." Follow the download instructions posted there. You may have to restart your browser after installation.

Uninstalling Java

If the updated Java is still giving you runtime errors, try uninstalling Java and then re-installing the updated version as described above.

To uninstall Java:

Click on your PC's "Start" button and then click on "Control Panel" In the Control Panel icon list, double click on "Add or Remove Programs" Select any of the programs listed (look for Runtime Environment and Java Updates) and click on the "Remove" at the top of the list.

Once Java is uninstalled, go back to and re-install the newest version.
