subject: Is Facebook Just a Waste of Time? Part 1 [print this page] If there is one thing I have learned since joining the world of Internet Marketing, it is that Facebook plays a pivotal role in my business maybe more so than any other ways of marketing.
Facebook launched in September 2006 and has literally taken the world by storm and in January 2009 a study ranked Facebook as the most used social network site by worldwide monthly active users, with MySpace coming in second. Funnily enough, despite the fact many of us Internet Marketers out there use this site for work purposes, it is common practise in the work place to ban Facebook to discourage staff from wasting time!
Well since nearly everybody I know has Facebook you might be thinking that I'm a bit slow off the start to actually be writing an article about a networking site everybody already knows about! However, I have wrote this article to emphasize just how essential this site actually is to budding new Internet Marketers who have little or no marketing budget, and to stress the importance by revealing that many successful Internet Marketers out there actually made their first sale (and several sales thereafter) from Facebook.
So why is Facebook so important and not to be viewed as a waste of time? Facebook allows you to actually make friends with potential customers or colleagues and this is hugely important because people buy from people (not businesses) that they like, know and trust. It also allows people who are interested in your business to see what you have to offer as a business person and as a mentor. Many people underestimate the importance of building friendships online which is what Facebook is all about, you get more of a sense of the person in a way that perhaps you wouldn't from the likes of Twitter for example.
I have found the best way to make the most of this highly popular networking site is to not sell, sell, sell to people. You don't make friends with people by constantly hounding them trying to get their money! This is also mutually beneficial because it allows you to connect and share useful information with other perhaps more experienced Internet Marketers, and you can't knock help like that! People will buy from you because they actually like you and you will buy from them because they have helped you in the past and you have helped them. What more could you ask for from such a wonderful and powerful tool?!
