subject: Fires And Its Psychological Impact [print this page]

"We all know that fire accidents are among the most dreadful disaster anyone could ever experience. In fact, people say that being robbed is better than being a victim of a fire accident because when you get robbed, you still have a lot left, while in a fire accident, you may lose everything even your home. Faulty electrical wirings or unattended lamps or candles or children playing with matches are some of the major causes of fire accidents.

Many people who have been fire victims or who have been trapped in a fire and were able to survive have suffered from some psychological problems which usually manifest in any or all of the following:

DREAMS - Dreams are the most common manifestation of the psychological damage suffered by those who are victims of fire accidents. Their dreams are recurrent and it is mostly about the fateful day. There are those who can't sleep properly because they are usually awakened by their nightmares.

FEAR - Some people develop certain phobias that were triggered by their experience. There are even those who would just scream out of nowhere and when they see fire, they would just freak out uncontrollably.

Here are a few ways to help fire victims overcome these problems:

COUNSELLING - One of the most important things a victim can do is to join a counseling program. Seeking professional help is a very good way for a victim to cope. The counselor will usually ask about the details of the patient's experience and would try to find a way for that patient accept what had happened so that the person will be able to move on.

FUN - Engaging in fun activities are also effective coping techniques. Those who are close to the victims can try to bring them to the beach. The cool breeze of the wind and the sound of the waves are very relaxing and can appease one's emotions.

If you have someone who is traumatized because of fire, the best is to keep this person company most of the time. Doing this can let them feel that they are not alone during their time of depression. This can make them cope with this better and the recovery is faster as well.
