subject: Nokia X3 Touch And Type Handset Versatility At Its Best [print this page]

Innovation need not come in giant strides though they certainly get the most marketing mileage. In the world of gadget wizardry, even an incremental novelty can make a dent, however small.

Finnish mobile phone leader Nokia shows to the world a sample of that with its Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type feature phone which, as the branding suggests, simply marries touchscreen functionality with a conventional alphanumeric keypad in a candybar form.

Its Nokias first in this form mix, offering the unique data input versatility of having both features and echoes a similar innovation from Blackberrys Torch.

S40 Touch Debuts

Nokia has finally made real its planned revisions on its S40 UI to become the S40 Touch that is now used on the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type for the first time. The system interface activates touchscreen functionality with the right display technology and can be deactivated in regular candybars.

The new Nokia uses a 2.4-inch resistive touchscreen with QVGA resolution in 256k colors. When activated, the 4-row alphanumeric keypad loses the need to have a navigational center pad or trackball where the touchscreen feature takes over for navigating though menus and making a selection.

Features at a Glance

Measuring a slim 106.2 x 48.4 x 9.6mm and weighing a feather light 77.4g, the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type comes out in four stylish colors of lilac pink, white silver, petrol blue and dark metal. This betrays its product positioning among the trendier segments of a wider market looking for either touchscreen or conventional candybar. Now they can have both.

Its also a 3G phone with HSDPA/HSUPA data speeds on a quad band UMTS as well as a 2Gphone with class 10 GPRS/EDGE on the quad band GSM radio. GPS is judiciously taken off but it still gets WiFi 802/11 b/g/n for hotspot surfing while local high speed data transfers get served with microUSB v2.0 and Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP for wired and wireless options, respectively.

Its imaging comes with a 5 megapixel fixed focus camera with 4X digital zoom and video recording at VGA resolution and 18fps frame rates.

Like its cousins in the XpressMusic and Comes with Music line-up, the Nokia X3-02 Touch and Type is a competent music phone that comes with dedicated music playback keys. Listen to its onboard stereo FM radio with RDS or its media players for the popular audio and video files either from a 3.5 mm headphone jack using your favorite high fidelity headphones.

Or you can go wireless stereo using its A2DP profile support for stereo Bluetooth headsets.

Onboard memory gets a minimalist 50 MB but whats important is you get microSD support for external memory expandability of up to 32 GB. It modest 860 mAh li-ion battery provides up to 28 hours of nonstop music playback on a single charge. You also get 5.3 hours on 2G and 3.3 hours on 3G and 408 hours on standby mode.
