subject: Internet Marketing Vs Old School Marketing [print this page]

The process of marketing a product or service broadly involves the following steps. Yet despite the overwhelming advantages available with internet marketing, the old school methods and techniques persist.

Discovering what customers want.

* Old School Marketing - conduct or buy survey and demographic data, field studies and interviews which can go stale and out of date quickly.

* Internet Marketing - detailed and targeted statistical data, trimmed and focused in an infinite number of ways is readily available online and are always available in real time.

Prospecting and Lead Generation

* Old School Marketing - make a list of prospects; contact them by phone; set up some conference calls; invite prospects to attend a seminar or live presentation; phone, mail or physical follow-ups; go to networking events to develop more prospects and request referrals.

* Internet Marketing - use email and other contacts to generate a longer list of prospects - use email for introduction and to direct prospects to an informational website at their convenience - use a web-based video marketing presentation - use email and IM for follow-ups and online social networks to prospect additional leads and request referrals.

Advertising and Promotion

* Old School Marketing - radio, television, print media and lots of money! These techniques do not lend themselves well to targeted or niche marketing

* Internet Marketing - blogs, micro blogs, websites, pay per click advertising, online ads and banners, search engine optimization, blast email, affiliate marketing, niche marketing social network sites, and much of it is free!

And the winner is.... Internet Marketing laps the field!
