subject: How long should your articles be? [print this page]

Too long and readers may not finish reading your article, too short and they may perceive it hasn't enough value for them to read it at all.

When writing an article to publish online, either on your own website blog or on an online publishing site, make sure that it is a length that is optimal for search engine optimization efforts. Articles that are between 300 and 500 words in length should fit into this category.

Even if search engine optimization is not your goal, it is still a good idea to keep your articles at this length for your readers' sake. They are more likely to finish reading your article at this length, than if it was longer.

What's more, they could leave with only half of the information you wanted them to have, or with the impression that your article is too "wordy". Most Internet readers do not read a website page as they would a book, so the more concise the better.

This may mean splitting one long idea into 4 or even 5 articles, creating a series of articles. Be sure to label them so that the reader can pick and choose which ones they want to read, or so that they know what is coming up next to help them determine if they want to continue reading.

Above all, make your articles, informative and enjoyable to read ... your reader is then going to be more likely to click through to your website and return for more!
