Cairo Offers Undiscovered Treasures for Travelers

Within the city area, the Tentmakers Bazaar or Market is a very popular place to visit with a fabulous array of brightly colored fabrics on display. The Egyptian Museum is a good place to see mummified animals and other interesting items. The Mohandiseen area of town is a pleasant area for a quiet walk and dining. The downtown area runs westward from the Old Islamic Cairo to the Nile. Islamic Cairo is the oldest area of Cairo. This is for the adventurous traveler as the small alleyways and side streets are crowded and noisy, but you get a genuine experience of Egyptian culture here. One of Cairos most popular bazaars is Khan el Khalili. There is a huge selection of silks and other hand-made textiles available here. On Friday, Suq al-Goma is the place to explore for die hard shoppers. This is one of the largest flea markets south of The Citadel.

Cairo is made up of two vastly different sections, the Historic Cairo and the New Cairo. There are many excursions in the city to engage in as well as outside. Roda Island is south of Zamalek and is a great place to go see some interesting landmarks, including The Manial Palace. Out of the many oases in Egypt, Faiyum Oasis is one of the most famous. It is about 90 kilometers southwest of Cairo. Another unique location is the island of Zamalek and Gezira. The northern part is called Zamalek and is a popular destination for foreign tourists as well as expatriates. There are many upscale shopping centers, restaurants, and the magnificent Islamic Ceramics Museum. Gezira is the southern section which has the Opera House complex and the famous Cairo Hotel.

Beach excursions are also becoming very popular among tourists. The best places for water sports and diving are Hurghada, Safaga, and Marsa Matruh on the Red Sea coast. Diving and snorkeling are very popular and make for a memorable beach holiday. These cities are several hundred kilometers away from Cairo. Tours can easily be scheduled at hotels or other locations in the city. The Grand Egyptian Museum near the pyramids is under construction now. It is scheduled to open sometime between 2011 and 2013. Be sure to check with your hotel when you visit, as it might open sooner than later. High season is in the winter months, so remember to reserve a room ahead of time as Egypt is becoming a very popular destination.
