For the most part, dogs, cats and some caged birds, are extensions of our own family and are loyal to us, their keepers. After man and dog established a bond many thousands of years ago, many other kinds of animal life came under his spell; many were captured and tamed, while others simply captured our hearts just as the dog once did. Once this bond is formed, and these wild animals are domesticated and kept under our control, they have no further need to fend for themselves and thus man found that he must feed and look after them. An entire industry catered to our pets can be found in products especially made for them.

What we eat is not usually a good diet for our pets. It has been found that if fed a diet similar to ours, pets developed a varied range of illnesses. They have different requirements in both their food and health requirements. Dry pet foods, normally made by machines called extruders, blend then compress a variety of food products that are determined by the research produced by pet nutritional experts.

Product labels must state the correct content of pet food beginning with the most common ingredient (by weight). If the pet food is mainly made up of maize meal, then that must be the first item on the label list of ingredients. Regulation is supplied for pet foods just the same as food made for human consumption but the laws and regulations are looser.

Canned pet foods are made under pretty stringent regulations comparable to human foods and the canning process generally assures the food is not contaminated and bacteria free. Largely dog and cat canned foods contain a large amount of water so keep that into consideration when purchasing them. Many pet foods have a pleasing appearance and smell aimed directly at pet owners. If pets had their way the bags and cans would contain dead animals and rotten contents.

Whether you own a dog, cat, snake, budgie, gerbil, guinea pig, ferret, parrot, rat, or chinchilla you will want to buy pet supplies and food for it. Pet stores are plentiful on the internet and in every larger town and they offer thousands of products targeted to fit virtually every pet we own. If you own a horse you may wish to buy a bridle or saddle. A rabbit will require a hutch and hay and straw. Tropical fish will need an aquarium, heater, filter, gravel, and cleaning tools. Each pet we own has its own needs
