Flo TV Customer Reviews

I am and always will be an "early adopter" for any/all tech gadgets. Usually the early adopters, like me, have buyer's remorse...that was the case back in January 2010 when I bought the first FloTV (PTV-350). I paid the original $249 plus the whopping monthly subscription fees too. In a few days I started to notice a serious glitch: the video portion of the broadcasts would go black while the audio continued to play. Initially I thought it must be some kind of screen saver or power management thing, but alas it was a real hardware defect as confirmed by a phone call to FLoTV tech support. BTW the tech support phone number is: 888-993-5688. They are very friendly & courteous support personnel "English-speaking Americans". I learned that FloTV devices are actually made by the cell phone giant HTC, and the flaw with the video was just appearing at the time of my phone call. I was told, in all sincerity, they had no idea how to fix but they were "working on it". Thankfully, I had purchased my FloTV device on Amazon.com and the returns are swift & painless. I cancelled the monthly membership to FloTV subscription and returned the device to Amazon.com, recv'd a full refund within a day or two.

I really liked the device, so I waited six months and ordered a new one (again from Amazon.com "just in case"). The new one arrived in two days and I noticed a huge difference right away. First, the subscription is way down...now it's just $75/year as opposed to the aforementioned $179...so, that works out to $6.25/month HUGE SAVINGS). Secondly, the setup and install/activation is easier now plus the firmware updates are a no-brainer. The video problem that exsisted back in January has been eliminated and it's much more stable now! FYI: I live in a rural part of Pennsylvania's Lancaster County and I get every single channel 100% of the time.

They've added the Crackle Movies to the standard lineup now, where before it was only available to the iPhone crowd (jerks). Crackle has pretty decent films like Bram Stoker's Dracula, Starman, and as I'm typing this review it's "Reign Over Me" w/Adam Sandler.

The FloTV coverage of the 2010 World Cup soccer was superb, they actually added an extra channel to the lineup just for the World Cup. When the World Cup finals were done, the channel vanished the next day.

The battery life is stellar with 4 lights (full strength) for 3-4 hours. Usually I put it on a charger at night. Ready to go in the morning.

So...if you're reading this FloTV people, my only gripe is the lack of screen protection. For $199 price tag, theHTC people could toss in a cheap black nylon or neoprene sleeve.

UPDATE: July 18, 2010...this morning's newspaper had an advertisement for FloTV PTV350 at another "brick & mortar" chain for $149, so I wrote to Amazon.com to ask for a $48 refund since my purchase June 29th (19 days ago) and Amazon.com refused my request! The amount $197.64 paid on June 29th would not warrant a $48 matching refund, so I have returned the FloTV PTV350 to Amazon.com for a full $197.64 refund. Subsequently, I have purchased another FloTV from the aforementioned "brick & mortar" chain. I drove to the store, bought it, brought it home & activated it...works fine! I know I will get my $197.64 back from Amazon.com and I still have a FloTV but now I only paid $158 (PA 6% tax).

Maybe, someday, merchants will finally understand that customer satisfaction is essential for any/all repeat business. Really, in this scenario...would it have killed Amazon.com to provide a partial refund in the amount of $48.00? personally, I do not think so! I'm sure there are some who will disagree

New Update: (July 25, 2010)...the FloTV channel lineup has a new addition, it's the Discovery Channel! Just in time for "Shark Week"! Now if they would get rid of MTV and Nickolodeon? Oh well, I guess the children must have TV too
