subject: Vent Covers As Decorating Items [print this page]

You may have visions of your own about how your new home dcor would look but it's always nice to have an alternative plan, like when you have to change the design of your vents. Using the functional air vents in a room to enhance the overall ambiance is one of the lesser known techniques for home improvement. There are hundreds of sites on the Internet related to home decorating, and a few of them mentioned the use of vent covers as decorative pieces

One thing I learned as a home decorator is that vents can be a functional feature but an eye sore. The problem is that these vents need to stay because they are necessary for proper ventilation. Therefore, the best thing to do is to just find a way around this problem and get a well-designed vent cover that will complement your room's decor.

I just thought, if I were to design a room similar to those decorated by professional interior decorators, the vent covers will have to be much prettier than the generic look. Changing the vent covers requires a whole lot of effort regarding planning and the actual decorating, but the results are definitely worth it.

Try to use your imagination when thinking of vent cover designs. What colors soothe you? Do you prefer formal, informal or positively laid-back style of decorating? When you have answers to these questions, it's time to go shopping for well-designed vent covers.

Always look for materials that will last for your vent covers. Solid brass is the sturdiest material for vent covers. Aluminum is the material of choice of home owners who want something less expensive than brass but just as durable. One more reason why you may want to try aluminum vent covers is the ease of personalization; you can paint them.

Wooden vent covers are extremely beautiful especially if the woodwork is done by an artist. The main wood materials used by decorators are oak, maple and cherry. You can use a colorant to personalize the look of your air vents as wood absorbs color better than any material.

Plastic is the least expensive material for vent covers, so you should get this if you're working with a smaller budget. However, plastic is the least visually appealing among the vent cover materials we mentioned here.

Your vent sizes may limit your choices for you. It is best to measure your vents first before buying online or ordering using a catalog. To perform the measurement correctly, remove the original vent cover to expose the ventilation opening.
