subject: Don't Lose Weight to Get Healthy [print this page] Get healthy to lose weight! Get healthy to lose weight!
Our culture is OBSESSED with losing weight at all costs! People will try any diet, any supplement, any surgery to lose weight. Of course everyone wants the quickest, easiest way to drop those dreadful pounds.
I saw video on CNN where a markedly obese teen had surgery to remove 80% of her stomach to lose weight. Seriously? What doctor in his right mind would make that call. Has everyone lost common sense? He didn't take in to account she may need that portion of her stomach for good DIGESTION?
I know of several people who have had surgery to remove portions of stomach or intestines because of cancer and are now experiencing extreme problems with nutrition absorption. Why would you remove a majority of a healthy stomach and risk nutritional deficiency for the rest of your life that's never going to be repairable?
I feel a more common sense approach would be to investigate the cause of weight gain. And there are probably as many causes as there are people who are overweight. From poor diets, sedentary lifestyles, eating "comfort food" because of stress, toxic exposure; the list could go on and on.
But does just losing weight make you healthy?
We have friends and acquaintances who have severe chronic illnesses who are thin. Not skinny like one would think of abnormally underweight, but just average normal weight for their height. Two have had heart attacks, three had cancer. One was a marathoner. If thin was healthy then this does not compute.
So, what makes you healthy? Healthy is cellular wellness. When all your cells function at their best and communicate with one another as tissues and organs. How does that happen? Not by just cutting out parts of organs or tissue. It's by investigating what is causing the majority of cells to malfunction or miscommunicate and eliminate or reverse the cause.
God has made our bodies VERY resilient. Your cells take a lot of abuse before the signs of malfunction show up as symptoms. That's why it appears as though one can look quite healthy until one day they get a dreaded diagnosis or suddenly die. The body keeps trying to balance thousands of chemical processes as best it can until the last straw hits the camel's back.
So, how do you find and eliminate the cause of chronic weight gain or other chronic signs of illness? Sometimes the answer is quite obvious like a diet of fast food or a sedentary lifestyle. But it could be something like a toxic exposure to mold or a diet too high in artificial sweetener. Cutting out most of your stomach to make sure you eat less and absorb less nutrients to force your weight loss changes nothing except now you'll be thinner and unhealthy.
