subject: A New Kind Of Energy Efficient Lighting [print this page]

Gather around, dear readersGather around, dear readers. Anyone interested in energy efficient lighting should take a seat and lend an ear. Of the available lighting options on the market, hew compare to LED lights. In fact, compared to conventional incandescent lights, LEDs burn brighter, longer, for cheaper. Think of these as the Al Gore, green alternatives that not only help you save money, but can save the planet. Yes, a tall order, but there is a lot at stake.

LED lights are making their way into more and more homes. That said, they are also being used in more and more unexpected places. I'm talking about modern flashlights, book lights, and camping lanterns. Basically, anywhere or anything that can cast a light or take a bulb. Most people using them for the first time are delighted too see how brightly they burn and how much light they give off.

Now, LED is an acronym for "light emitting diode." Yes, either way you pronounce it, it's essentially a semiconductor that actually converts electricity into light -- all in your light bulb. This is why when they are initially activated, there is a lag in brightness. The semiconductor is warming up. Never fear, in about one minute the bulb will be up to speed and burning brightly. Of course, this is one of the aspects of LED lights that most people don't appreciate -- perhaps for good reason.

It's all about how they are manufactured. What is key about these energy efficient bulbs is the fact they don't use a traditional lighting filament. It's that filament that is so dangerous for the environment. It just uses far too much energy to emit light. The LED uses diodes that heat an electron-rich gas encased in the bulb, which then creates the source of light. They are available in a variety of wattage ratings -- but regardless of which one you choose, they provide a nice, clean light.

So, what are the advantages of an LED light? What's all the hullabaloo about the environment? it should be obvious that the advantages of LED lights would be self-evident. The fact of the matter is that they are too numerous to mention. That being said, we did try to list a few of their benefits. While their environmental impact is minimal, their design impact can be tremendous. The lighting possibilities for LED lights are truly breathtaking.
