Sonia Gandhi today became the Congress President for the record fourth consecutive term. She was declared re-elected unopposed at a ceremony held at Congress headquarters in New Delhi on Friday. The ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and several other senior party leaders.

Addressing the party workers after her re-election, she said that they should not forget the "great responsibility" of working for all sections of society irrespective of whether the party is in power or not. Congress President thanked the party leaders and workers for giving the responsibility to her once again.

In her brief address, Congress President said that Congress always stood for all sections of the society and this should not be forgotten. "Since its inception, Congress has been working for every section of the society. Whether we are in government or not, we should not forget this big responsibility," she said.

The process of her re-election as Congress President was set in motion on Thursday with several prominent party leaders, including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Rahul Gandhi, proposing her name for the top post.

Even before her re-election for the fourth time, Sonia Gandhi had earned the title of longest-serving Congress President.

Sonia Gandhi holds great sway within the Congress Party. She crafted the strategies which gave Congress back-to-back general election victories, ending years in the political wilderness.

She is credited with shaping its welfare policies and is regarded as a champion of the poor as India undergoes rapid economic growth. Owing to her work for the poor and downtrodden, she is widely regarded a socialist at heart.
