A few years back the most important thing that most musicians where searching for on google was "how it's possible to get a recording contract". But these days the more savvy musicians realize that you do not want the tons of money a big label can supply to make music your job. The issue I see now with the 100% independent approach is that these new acts are totally ignoring the structure already set up in the music biz and making an attempt to do too much themselves.

Lets begin...
Day 1 - Go to your local record shop and look up bands that you like most and that you think you sound similar too. Music business head honchos who will be offering you the opportunity to get a recording contract like to stay with what they have signed before.
Day 2 - Look within the album jacket for the labels these band are signed to.
Day 3 - Get you manager to contact the AR dep. of the label and ask for a scout to come down and watch your show. ( ensure the gig is nice and close to their offices and try and book it on a Thursday night as music people don't like to go to gigs on the weekend for whatever reason. )

Day 4 - Get a killer set together that will electrify the scout, ensure you practice every day leading in to the gig but not on the day. ( you do not want to leave a great performance in the practice room ).
Day 5 - don't think simply because the AR guy likes your gig there'll be a free music contract waiting in your dressing room!!!
First he'll want to line up something called a "showcase" which is generally a personal gig where the top record company bosses will show up to inspect your act before getting the check book out.
These things are often a bit mortifying, because it's rather strange playing in front of only 9 folk all looking menacing and vital ; just do your best and play your guts out.
If all goes well they'll offer you an initial deal and then it'll be up to your executive to be sure you get what your worth. You really want to make sure you've a lot of liberty to make your music the way you want. Some music industry contracts can be particularly restrictive and kill your creativity, so look out.
*Note* I would recommend that you use this method with 2nd tier record firms initially and then have a go with he bigger boys once you've a few singles and a good sales track record under your belt. Perhaps even try to get a music publishing contract first.
Most major labels would like to see that you've had some success on your own before taking the risk and offering you a massive advance.
But to be totally fair with you for an instant, the idea of getting a record deal for me is a real turn off these days. I have discovered a simple system to make a list of fans and sell my music that is fully new to the music industry.
