subject: Making Your Product Development Outsourcing A Success [print this page]

Whether you are a big or a small company, anything that could lower your expenses is something that is worth taking a look at. This is especially the case when it comes to outsourcing. In today"s world, it is very rare to come across someone who is not familiar with what outsourcing is all about. But what really is all the brouhaha about outsourcing?

Outsourcing is about contracting a person or a company to do certain functions for your company. When people first learned about outsourcing, the focus then was on outsourcing functions that are non-core or are not income-generating. Today, however, outsourcing has shifted its focus and now includes even those functions that are part of the operations, as in the case of manufacturing companies.

Although outsourcing your product development can be quite scary, there are actually ways by which you can ensure its success. One of the first things that you need to do is clearly define the limitations of your project "" when it would start, up to when it would last, what would the service provider do. It is also a good idea to evaluate the service provider in much the same way that you would evaluate a full time employee.

When engaging in a product development outsourcing, make sure that the service provider has a previous work experience involving a business whose nature is similar to yours. This way, they do not have to take time off to learn how your organization works. No matter how tempting the offered price is of a service provider, if they do not have previous experience working in a company like yours, there is a probability that you might be on the losing end.

If it is your first time to get the services of a product development outsourcing company, it is a good idea to start small. This would give you an idea whether outsourcing is for you. By starting small you prevent huge losses should the project not work out.

Lastly, to make sure that you do not pay the service provider even when they are doing nothing, it is recommended that you tie the payment with specific milestones. For example, for product development outsourcing, once they have reached a certain number of products done, then the provider would get paid.
